Completed album production for “When Night Falls” by jazz/soul singer Sheilani Alex. Sheilani wanted to perform the songs live in the studio with a band, so after a couple rehearsals, we went into Fantasy Studios and recorded pretty much direct to disk. Sheilani’s working on the CD packaging right now.

Completed album design for “Live at Blackhawk” by the fabulous big band Lady K and The Kings of Swing. Since it’s extraordinary to have a woman leading this type of band, I felt it was important that Lady K was prominent on the cover, and then the colors had to be bright as well, to keep with the idea that this is indeed a unique CD.

Groove Tonic Media completed a video promo piece for Times 4. Putting together these kinds of promotional videos are like assembling an intricate puzzle, because the goal is to show the band in the best light possible and give the viewer a feel for what the band does, while keeping it short. Another layer of interest is added with a group that improvises a lot because a big part of what makes a band like this tick is the interaction between players.

Photographs taken for the Jonathan Poretz Band in San Francisco. This session was exciting and challenging at the same time. The band really swings, the audience was having a great time, and the musicians all have such strong personalities – I wanted to capture all that. The lighting was tricky on stage, adding an element of surprise to the shoot.

Groove Tonic Media designed a new website for Cressman Music. This was a fairly complex project because the object was to move all the data from an old site to the new one, but to provide a clean, reorganized feel in the process. We also created a newsletter template to match the site. The site is built on a powerful web based platform that is easy for the client to maintain, including blog updates and additions to the calendar.

Groove Tonic Media mastered “Gone”, the new CD by Kurt Ribak. Kurt writes some wonderful music, and he’s got a great trio. We hear this CD is doing great in Japan.

Groove Tonic Media created a video mini-documentary on bassist Kurt Ribak. This was really fun, because Kurt is a great communicator with a big personality that matches his commanding bass playing. The performance footage was shot in some very small and tight clubs, but that along with Kurt’s great conversation is what gives the piece it’s charm.

This photo shoot was for Lady K’s new album, Live at Blackhawk. Lady K has put together a band with lots of character and personality. We decided it would be more fun to try and capture each musician in an individual portrait than try and get the whole band in one shot. The photos are used in a fold-out collage on the CD booklet.

This project was different for me, because I had never worked with a classical artist before. Ben and I decided to go for something more casual, yet still let people know that there was some really serious playing going on (Ben Barrron is one fantastic guitarist). So we put him on the floor in the studio. Instantly casual, different than most classical portraits, and really reflecting the personality of the artist and the music.
